Creating Your Circle and Why It Matters

The Emily Joy Project

There’s an old saying my mother used to tell me: “Birds of a feather flock together.”
It took me years to truly understand what that meant, but now I see - the people you surround yourself with shape the direction of your heart, your healing, and your growth.

Your circle is more than the friends you hang out with. It’s your environment. It’s who speaks into your life, who you go to for advice, and who stands beside you when life gets heavy. And just like you wouldn’t plant flowers in rocky soil, you can’t expect your spirit to bloom in the wrong circle.

Know Who You Are Before You Build Your Circle

Before you can find the right people, you have to know you.
That means being clear about your values, your beliefs, and your purpose.

If you don’t stand firm in who you are, you’ll be easily pulled into circles that don’t align with your spirit. It’s not about judgment, it’s about energy.
When your values and your circle don’t match, you’ll feel it.
You’ll feel drained, anxious, or lost without even knowing why.

Take time to ask yourself:

  • What do I truly believe in?

  • What kind of energy do I want in my life?

  • What kind of friend or sister do I want to be?

When you can answer those questions, you’ll start attracting the people who reflect the same light.

The Wrong Circle Can Dim Your Light

It’s hard to admit, but not every friendship is healthy.
When you’re surrounded by negativity, gossip, competition, or people who don’t celebrate your growth, it chips away at your peace.
Sometimes we stay in circles that no longer serve us because we’re afraid of being alone, but loneliness in a crowd still feels empty.

The truth is, staying connected to the wrong energy can impact your mental health more than you realize.
When your environment doesn’t support your values, you begin to question your worth and your direction.
It’s okay to walk away. It’s okay to outgrow people. That’s not disloyal - that’s growth.

Letting go of what doesn’t align creates space for what does.

The Power of a Supportive Sisterhood

When you find your true circle - that supportive sisterhood that believes in you - everything changes.
These are the women who remind you of your strength when you forget, who celebrate your wins and sit with you through your tears.
They don’t compete; they complete the energy around you.

A real sisterhood lifts you up, holds you accountable, and helps you grow.
They don’t let you settle for less than you deserve, and they’ll lovingly call you out when you start doubting your worth.

Sisterhood is borrowed courage that returns with interest.
When one of us rises, we all rise.

Growth Requires Accountability

Growth doesn’t happen in comfort.
Your circle should challenge you - not in a harsh way, but in love.
They should encourage you to chase your goals, to heal from your past, and to keep showing up even when it’s hard.

Without growth, we become stagnant, and stagnant energy breeds frustration and self-doubt.
The right circle reminds you that healing is an ongoing process and that you’re capable of so much more than you think.

Protect Your Peace and Be the Sister You Seek

Protect your energy like it’s sacred, because it is.
You don’t have to give everyone access to your time and heart.
Boundaries are not walls; they’re doors you choose to open when it feels safe and aligned.

And remember, as much as you’re searching for the right circle, someone out there is praying for a sister just like you.
Be the kind of woman who listens, encourages, forgives, and shows up with grace.

When you embody the energy you wish to attract, your circle will naturally form around that light.

Final Thoughts

Creating your circle isn’t about finding perfect people; it’s about finding aligned people.
Your circle should inspire you to grow, challenge you to stay true to your values, and remind you that you’re never walking this road alone.

So take inventory of who’s around you and make sure they reflect the best version of who you’re becoming.

Because in the end, your circle shapes your story…
And you get to decide what kind of story that will be.
